63-001: IA 1041 Fiduciary Return 63-001 (2025)

Iowa · Iowa DOR · Used for tax years 2025

The 2025 IA 1041 is Iowa’s fiduciary return for estates and trusts. It records estate or trust details, fiduciary information, residency status, and information about beneficiaries and composite credits.

What you'll need

Have the estate or trust’s name and FEIN, the fiduciary’s name and address, and the income, deduction, distribution, and payment information requested on the return. The form also asks for the decedent’s SSN, date of death, Iowa probate county, and probate number.

Depending on the entries you make, the form calls for:

  • Federal Form 1041, Schedule B amounts to complete Iowa Schedule B.
  • IA 102 with an amended return.
  • Federal Schedule 4972 for Iowa lump sum tax.
  • IA 130FID for the out-of-state tax credit.
  • IA 148 for other nonrefundable or refundable tax credits.
  • Federal Forms 1099 or supporting documentation for income tax withheld.
  • Iowa Schedule CC for the composite and PTET credit.
  • IA 4136 for the motor fuel tax credit.
  • Statements for Iowa additions and deductions to ESBT income on Schedule E.

Fiduciary Return Processing

Iowa Department of Revenue

PO Box 10467

Des Moines, IA 50306-0467

Paper-filed returns must be signed by hand or with a digital signature with a digital certificate. Stamped or typed signatures are not accepted.

For an amount due on line 48, pay electronically or submit payment with Iowa Tax Payment Voucher (96-048). The form does not provide e-filing instructions.

Common mistakes

  • Using a typed or stamped signature. Paper returns require a handwritten signature or a digital signature with a digital certificate.
  • Leaving out dollars and cents. The calculation pages specify that amounts must include dollars and cents.
  • Missing the composite return warning. A “yes” answer to any of questions 1 through 4 on page 2 may mean there is a composite return requirement. The form directs you to the instructions.
  • Forgetting IA 102 with an amended return. The amended-return checkbox says to include it.
  • Entering a negative income distribution deduction. Schedule B, line 15 says to enter 0 if the result is zero or less.
