41-171: IA 102 Iowa Amended Return Schedule 41-171 (Revision 2025-06)

Iowa · Iowa DOR · Used for tax years 2024, 2025, 2026

IA 102 is a schedule used to report and explain changes to a previously filed Iowa income or franchise tax return, including changes to income, deductions, or credits. Include it with your amended return, not as a separate filing.

Who files this form

Include IA 102 with an amended Iowa income or franchise tax return filed on any of these forms:

  • IA 1040, Individual Income Tax Return.
  • IA PTE-C, Iowa Composite Return, for tax year 2022 or later.
  • IA 1041, Fiduciary Return.
  • IA 1065, Partnership Return of Income.
  • IA 1120, Corporation Income Tax Return.
  • IA 1120F, Franchise Return for Financial Institutions.
  • IA 1120S, Income Tax Return for S Corporations.

The schedule also lists IA 1040C, Composite Individual Income Tax Return for Nonresidents, for tax years before 2022.

IA 102 explains changes to a previously filed return. Do not file it separately.

What you'll need

Have your amended Iowa return and copies of the schedules, worksheets, and documentation supporting each change. You will also need your name, SSN or FEIN, and tax period end date.

Additional documents depend on why you are amending:

  • Federal amended return: Include a copy of that return. For alternative partnership reporting procedures, include the federal forms or documents supporting and describing those procedures.
  • Federal audit: Include the federal document showing the final determination and explaining the final federal adjustments. For Code 4, also include your federal amended return if one was filed.
  • Federal centralized AAR: An amending partnership must include its federal AAR. A direct or indirect partner must include an amended Iowa Schedule K-1, if received, and federal documents describing the partner's share of the adjustments.
  • Federal centralized partnership audit: The audited partnership must include the final federal determination and adjustment document. Partners must include an amended Iowa Schedule K-1, if received, and federal documents describing their share of the adjustments.
  • Iowa pass-through entity audit: Direct or indirect owners must include a copy of their amended Iowa Schedule K-1.
  • Election to pay for owners: A pass-through entity electing to pay on its owners' behalf under reason Code 6 or 7 must also file IA 103.
  • Capital loss carryback: Include IA 1139-CAP with amended Iowa returns for all periods involved, including the loss year.
  • Protective claim: Include a detailed explanation of the claim and the unresolved events affecting it.

How to file

  1. Enter your identifying information and tax period end date, and check the return form you are amending.
  2. Choose one reason code for the amendment.
  3. On page 2, identify each amended return line that changed and explain why. Attach supporting documentation. For an individual return, explain how the changes are allocated between spouses.
  4. If you are reporting changes from a pass-through entity you own or are a beneficiary of, enter its name, address, and FEIN, and indicate whether you received an amended Iowa Schedule K-1.
  5. Submit IA 102 with your amended Iowa return, not separately.

Electronic filing: Corporation, pass-through, fiduciary, composite, and franchise income taxpayers must file electronically if any of these conditions apply for the tax year:

  • Gross receipts are at least $250,000.
  • The Iowa return claims $25,000 or more in tax credits.
  • The pass-through entity must provide 10 or more Schedule K-1s to owners.
  • The taxpayer files a consolidated Iowa return.

This requirement also applies to amended returns. To request an exception, complete and submit Electronic Filing Requirement Exception Request Form 78-641.

Common mistakes

  • Filing IA 102 by itself. The schedule must accompany your amended return.
  • Overlooking electronic filing requirements. The text expressly states that these requirements also apply to amended returns.
  • Leaving changes unexplained. Give the amended return line reference and reason for each change, and attach supporting documentation.
  • Choosing “Other” without an explanation. Code 9 requires a description of your reason for amending on page 2.
  • Omitting the allocation between spouses. For changes to an individual income tax return, indicate how the changes are allocated.
  • Omitting IA 103 when electing to pay for owners. For reason Code 6 or 7, a pass-through entity making this election must also file IA 103.

Questions people ask

What is IA 102 used for?

It reports and explains changes to a previously filed Iowa income or franchise tax return. Include it with the amended return.

Which code should I use if my reason is not listed?

Use Code 9, “Other,” if Codes 1 through 8 do not describe your reason. Explain the reason on page 2.

What is a protective claim?

A protective claim is a refund claim where your right to a refund depends on unresolved events. Use Code 2 and include a detailed explanation of the claim and the events affecting it.

Can an Iowa capital loss be carried back?

The text allows an Iowa capital loss to be carried back three tax periods. Use Code 8 and include IA 1139-CAP with amended Iowa returns for every period involved, including the loss year.

Do I need to explain the refund or amount due on separate IA 102 lines?

No. The text says the specific lines previously used for that explanation are no longer required and have been removed from the schedule.
