Illinois · Illinois DOR · Used for tax years 2024

Illinois Schedule 1299-I provides information and worksheets for calculating income tax credits. It helps determine the credit amounts to enter on Schedule 1299-C for individuals, Schedule 1299-A for partnerships and S corporations, or Schedule 1299-D for corporations and fiducia

Who files this form

Use Schedule 1299-I’s instructions and worksheets if you earned one of the income tax credits it covers. It helps you calculate the credit amounts to report on:

  • Schedule 1299-C for individuals, in Column E.
  • Schedule 1299-A for partnerships and S corporations, in Column E.
  • Schedule 1299-D for corporations and fiduciaries, in Column F.

Follow the instructions for the specific credit and the Schedule 1299 you are completing. Keep Schedule 1299-I and your worksheets or calculations in your records.

If you file an Illinois combined unitary return, complete one Schedule 1299-A or 1299-D for the entire unitary business group, listing credits by unitary member.

What you'll need

The attachments you need depend on the credit you claim. Attach the applicable documents to your Schedule 1299:

  • Schedule K-1-P if a partnership or S corporation distributed a credit to you.
  • Credit certificates from the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), Department of Natural Resources (DNR), or Department of Human Services (DHS), as required for your credit.
  • Proof of a transferred credit, if you received one.
  • Illinois Housing Development Authority or city of Chicago certificates and applicable transfer documentation for the Affordable Housing Donations credit.
  • Federal Form 8839, Qualified Adoption Expenses, for the Adoption credit.
  • Hospital credit transfer notices, if you transferred that credit or are claiming a transferred credit.
  • Your REV Illinois Investment Credit Worksheet, if you claim that credit.

Keep copies of your worksheets, calculations, and Schedule 1299-I. Attach any other documents required by the credit’s instructions or your Schedule 1299 instructions. IDOR may ask for more information to support your claim.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving out required attachments. The text warns that missing documentation can delay processing, cause a subtraction or credit to be disallowed, or lead to correspondence from IDOR.
  • Using a Schedule K-1-P from the wrong tax period. Its listed tax year ending must fall within your tax year to claim the reported credit.
  • Combining different credit years on Schedule 1299-C. Use a separate line for each tax year in which a credit was earned or is being carried forward.
  • Claiming both overlapping child care credits. You cannot claim the Dependent Care Assistance Program credit and the five percent Employee Child Care credit together.
  • Expecting a DCEO certificate for the REV Illinois Investment credit. The text says approved REV projects do not receive a DCEO certificate for qualified property eligible for this investment credit.

Questions people ask

Should I round dollar amounts?

Yes. Use whole dollars on Schedule 1299-I. Drop amounts under 50 cents and round amounts of 50 cents or more up to the next dollar.

What if I run out of worksheet space?

Use a separate sheet in the same format. Follow the instructions to combine the worksheet amounts and additional-sheet amounts on Schedule 1299-C, 1299-D, or 1299-A. Do not enter the total on your additional sheets.

What if I receive more than one Schedule K-1-P for the same credit?

Add the amounts for that credit. Report the total on the corresponding credit-code line in Step 3, Column F of Schedule 1299-A or 1299-C, or Column G of Schedule 1299-D. Attach the supporting Schedules K-1-P.

Can every credit be carried forward?

No. Credit codes beginning with “0” cannot be carried forward. The Apprenticeship Education Expense and Recovery and Mental Health credits cannot be carried forward.
