Illinois · Illinois DOR · Used for tax years 2024
Form IL-2210 calculates Illinois individuals' penalties for underpayment of estimated tax, unpaid tax, and late filing for 2024. It includes penalty worksheets and is attached to Form IL-1040.
Who files this form
Form IL-2210 is for individuals who choose to calculate their Illinois penalties themselves. The Illinois Department of Revenue encourages you to let it calculate your penalties and send you a bill instead.
If you complete the form, attach it to Form IL-1040. It covers penalties for underpayment of estimated tax, unpaid tax, and late filing.
When it's due
For tax year 2024, the form prints these estimated-tax installment due dates:
- Quarter 1: 15th day of the 4th month of the tax year.
- Quarter 2: 15th day of the 6th month of the tax year.
- Quarter 3: 15th day of the 9th month of the tax year.
- Quarter 4: 15th day of the 1st month after the end of the tax year.
The form refers to the return’s original and extended due dates, but does not print specific calendar dates for them.
What you'll need
Have these records available to complete the applicable parts of the form:
- Your current-year and prior-year tax returns, including tax and credit amounts.
- Your name and Social Security number as shown on Form IL-1040. If your prior-year return used a different Social Security number, have that number available too.
- W-2 and 1099 forms showing Illinois withholding.
- Records of pass-through withholding made on your behalf.
- Amounts and dates of payments, including estimated payments, Form IL-505-I payments, and credits carried forward from a prior year.
- If you choose to annualize your income, Illinois base income amounts for the first 3, 5, and 8 months and all 12 months of the year.
How to file
Attach your completed Form IL-2210 to Form IL-1040. The form identifies it as IL Attachment No. 19.
If you have more than four payments to apply to any quarter in Penalty Worksheet 1, use a separate sheet in the same format and attach it to Form IL-2210.
The supplied form does not provide a mailing address or e-filing directions. For payment options, it refers you to the Form IL-1040, Line 41 instructions.
Common mistakes
- Using the wrong return to calculate installments. The estimated-tax underpayment penalty is based on tax shown due on your original return. Do not use tax from an amended return filed after the extended due date to calculate Step 2 installments.
- Completing Penalty Worksheet 1 unnecessarily. Do not complete it if you paid the required amount from Line 13 by each quarter’s payment due date.
- Calculating a late-filing penalty when it does not apply. Step 5 says to calculate it only if you file after the extended due date and your tax was not paid by the original due date.
- Annualizing without meeting the stated condition. Complete Step 6 only if your income was not received evenly throughout the year and you choose to annualize. Finish Lines 38 through 56 in one column before moving to the next, starting with Column A.
- Skipping the worksheet instructions. The form says you must follow the instructions to complete the penalty worksheets properly. Those instructions are not included in the supplied text.
