Hawaii · Hawaii DoTax · Used for tax years 2024

Hawaii Form N-615 calculates tax for children under age 14 who have more than $1,000 in unearned income. It uses the child’s income and the parent’s taxable income and filing status to calculate the tax entered on the child’s Form N-11 or Form N-15.

Who files this form

For tax year 2024, Form N-615 is for children under age 14 who have unearned income of more than $1,000. It computes the child’s tax using information from both the child’s and the parent’s returns.

If the child’s unearned income on line 1 is $1,000 or less, stop and do not file this form.

What you'll need

Have these returns and details available:

  • The child’s Form N-11 or Form N-15, name, Social Security number, unearned income, taxable income, and filing status.
  • Whether the child itemized deductions.
  • The parent’s name, Social Security number, filing status, taxable income, and tax from Form N-11 or Form N-15.
  • Line 5 amounts from Forms N-615 for any other children of the same parent.

The form also refers to separate instructions and, for tax calculations, the Tax Table, Tax Rate Schedule, Capital Gains Tax Worksheet in the Form N-11 or N-15 instructions, or Form N-168.

How to file

Attach Form N-615 only to the child’s Form N-11 or Form N-15.

Enter the final tax from line 18 on the child’s Form N-11, line 27, or Form N-15, line 44. Use whole dollars and indicate that tax from Form N-615 is included.

The supplied form does not give a mailing address or e-file directions.

Common mistakes

  • Do not enter the parent’s information without checking the separate instructions, as the form cautions.
  • Do not file Form N-615 if line 1 is $1,000 or less. However, if line 3 is zero or less, or line 5 is zero, stop completing the form but still attach it to the child’s return.
  • On line 7, include only the other children’s line 5 amounts, not this child’s amount.
  • Do not include tax from Form N-152 or Form N-814 in the parent’s tax on line 10.
  • On line 18, use the larger of lines 16 and 17, enter whole dollars, and indicate on the child’s return that Form N-615 tax is included.
