N-20: Partnership Tax Return (2024)

Hawaii · Hawaii DoTax · Used for tax years 2024

Form N-20 is Hawaii’s Partnership Return of Income for 2024. It reports partnership income, deductions, Hawaii adjustments, and partners’ shares of income, deductions, and credits. It also reports applicable taxes, nonresident withholding, payments, and any balance due or overpay

What you'll need

Have your federal Form 1065 available. Form N-20 uses its business code and amounts from comparable lines for lines 1 through 9. You will also need the partnership’s federal employer identification number and Hawaii tax identification number.

Depending on what you report, the form calls for these attachments:

  • Amended return: Schedule AMD.
  • Electing pass-through entity: Schedule PTE.
  • Nonresident withholding distributed to nonresident partners: Schedule NP.
  • Farm income: Federal Schedule F (Form 1040).
  • Rental real estate income: Federal Form 8825.
  • IRC section 1231 gain or loss: Schedule D-1.
  • IRC section 179 expense deduction: Federal Form 4562.
  • Hawaii adjustments and certain other income, expenses, deductions, or items: Supporting schedules where the form says to attach them.
  • Tax credits: The credit forms identified on Schedule K for the credits you report.

For the payments section, have the amounts of your 2024 estimated tax payments from Forms N-201V and N-288A, plus any payments made with an extension.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing preparer discussion permission with power of attorney. The form states that permission for the Department of Taxation to discuss the return with the preparer does not replace Form N-848, Power of Attorney.
  • Using line 25 on an original return. Line 25, for the amount paid or overpaid on the original return, is marked “AMENDED RETURN ONLY.”

Line 22 lets you specify an amount to credit to 2025 estimated tax and an amount to refund.

Who signs the return?

The signature line is for a general partner or limited liability company member. The form also has a separate signature area for a paid preparer.
