What you'll need

Have the information and attachments that apply to your return:

  • Your Social Security number, your spouse’s information if applicable, and each dependent’s name, Social Security number, and relationship to you.
  • Your federal adjusted gross income and information for Hawaii additions, subtractions, and deductions.
  • Copy 2 of Form W-2. The form directs you to attach W-2s for Hawaii income tax withheld.
  • Your 2024 estimated tax payments, estimated tax applied from your 2023 return, and any payment made with an extension.
  • An affidavit if claiming the exceptional trees deduction.
  • Form N-311 for the refundable food/excise tax credit, Schedule X for the renter or child and dependent care credits, and Schedule CR for credits reported from that schedule.
  • A copy of the invoice if claiming the child passenger restraint system credit.
  • Schedule AMD if filing an amended return.
  • Your bank routing number, account number, and account type if completing the direct-deposit fields.

How to file

Complete the identification, filing status, income, deduction, tax, credit, and payment sections that apply. Sign and date the return. If filing jointly, both spouses must sign.

For payment, the form says to pay online at hitax.hawaii.gov or attach a check or money order payable to “Hawaii State Tax Collector.” Use the marked attachment areas for your payment and Copy 2 of Form W-2.

The supplied form does not provide a mailing address or instructions for electronically filing the return. The online option printed on the form is for payment.

Common mistakes

  • Submitting a photocopy. The form says not to submit one.
  • Ignoring the formatting directions. Use black ink, enter one letter or number in each box, fill ovals completely, and use capital letters for the first four letters of last names.
  • Claiming yourself when someone else can claim you. Do not fill oval 6a if you can be claimed as a dependent on another person’s return. Fill the oval above line 21 instead.
  • Leaving line 24 blank. The form says this line must be completed.
  • Not rounding amounts. Round to the nearest dollar and shade the minus sign for a negative amount.
  • Including the estimated tax penalty in the wrong place. Do not include the line 50 penalty on line 42 or line 48.
  • Missing a joint-return signature. Both spouses must sign.
