Common mistakes
- Treating a filing extension as extra time to pay. The extension applies only to filing the return, not paying the tax.
- Mailing a payment of $10,000 or more. These payments must be made electronically.
- Using an incomplete voucher or one without a valid scanline. Complete the voucher in its entirety.
- Leaving the FEIN off your check or money order. The checklist says to include it.
- Mailing the worksheet or instructions. Keep them with your records and mail only the voucher and payment.
- Folding, stapling or paper clipping mailed items. The form prohibits these and says to remove all check stubs.
Questions people ask
Does a filing extension give me more time to pay?
No. The extension is for filing the return only. Tax must be paid by the statutory due date.
Will Georgia honor an automatic federal filing extension?
Yes. If you receive an automatic extension to file your federal return, Georgia will honor it. No late-filing penalty will be assessed if the Georgia return is filed by the federal extended date.
How is my IT-560C payment applied?
The amount paid is credited toward the tax liability shown on your completed return. The form says to pay the tax that will be due on the final return.
What happens if I pay late?
If tax is not paid by the return's original due date, a late-payment penalty of 1/2 of 1% per month of the tax due will be assessed. Interest will also be due.
