Common mistakes
- Treating IT-560 as an extension request. It is only a payment voucher. An extension gives more time to file, not more time to pay.
- Using it for the wrong payment. Do not use IT-560 for quarterly estimated payments or corporate tax payments.
- Sending the worksheet or entire page. Mail only the cut-out voucher and payment.
- Preparing the voucher incorrectly. Use a voucher with a valid scanline, complete it fully, and do not handwrite information or print on both sides of the paper.
- Attaching items together. Do not staple or paper clip the payment and voucher. Remove all check stubs.
- Leaving identifying information off the payment. Write your SSN or FEIN on your check or money order.
Questions people ask
Does IT-560 request an extension?
No. Use it to submit a payment when an extension has been requested or is in effect. The extension applies only to filing the return, not paying the tax.
Will Georgia honor my automatic federal filing extension?
Yes. Georgia will honor an automatic extension to file your federal return. No late-filing penalty will be assessed if you file the Georgia return by the extended federal filing date. Tax still must be paid by the statutory due date.
How do I report this payment on my completed return?
Claim it as estimated taxes. Form 500 filers should enter the amount on Line 26, Page 4. Form 501 filers should enter it on the Georgia Estimated Tax Paid line.
What happens if I pay late?
If tax is not paid by the return’s original due date, a late-payment penalty of 1/2 of 1% per month of the tax due will be assessed. Interest will also be due.
