Common mistakes

  • Treating the voucher as an extension request. IT-560 submits a payment only. An extension to file does not extend the time to pay.
  • Using it for the wrong payment. Do not use IT-560 for quarterly estimated tax payments or corporate tax payments.
  • Sending the worksheet or entire page. Mail only the cut-out voucher and payment.
  • Preparing the voucher incorrectly. Use a voucher with a valid scanline, complete it in full, do not handwrite information, and do not print on both sides of the paper.
  • Attaching or folding items. Do not fold, staple, or paper clip mailed items. Remove all check stubs.
  • Leaving identifying information off the payment. Write your SSN or FEIN on your check or money order.

Questions people ask

Does IT-560 request an extension?

No. It is a payment voucher used when an extension has been requested or is in effect. The extension covers filing the return, not paying the tax.

Will Georgia honor my automatic federal filing extension?

Yes. Georgia honors an automatic extension to file your federal return. No late-filing penalty will be assessed if you file the Georgia return by the extended federal filing date.

Where do I claim the payment on my completed return?

Claim the payment as estimated taxes. Form 500 filers should enter it on Line 26, Page 4. Form 501 filers should enter it on the Georgia Estimated Tax Paid line.

What happens if I pay late?

If the tax is not paid by the return’s original due date, a late-payment penalty of 1/2 of 1% per month of the tax due will be assessed. Interest will also be due.
