500: Individual Income Tax Return (2024)
Georgia · Georgia DOR · Used for tax years 2024
Georgia Form 500 is the main return Georgia residents, part-year residents and nonresidents use to report income, figure Georgia income tax and claim credits and refunds for 2024.
What you'll need
Have your Social Security number, date of birth, address, and driver’s license or state ID information ready. The form also asks for spouse information and each dependent’s name, Social Security number, and relationship to you.
Depending on your return, you will need:
- Federal Form 1040: Use your federal adjusted gross income for line 8. Include copies of pages 1 and 2 and Schedule 1 if line 8 is $40,000 or more, or if your gross income is less than your W-2s.
- Federal Schedule A: Include it if you use itemized deductions.
- Withholding statements: Include W-2s and/or 1099s when reporting Georgia tax withheld on wages and 1099s. Include applicable G2-A, G2-FL, G2-LP, or G2-RP forms when reporting other Georgia income tax withheld.
- Other state tax returns: Include a copy if you claim the other state(s) tax credit.
- Applicable Georgia schedules: These include Schedule 1 for income adjustments and Schedule 3 for part-year residents and nonresidents.
- Bank information: Enter your routing number, account number, and checking or savings account type if requesting direct deposit.

Common mistakes
- Using the wrong federal income figure: Line 8 asks for federal adjusted gross income, not federal taxable income.
- Using the federal standard deduction: The form says not to use it. Use either the Georgia standard deduction on line 11 or Georgia itemized deductions on line 12c, not both.
- Completing the wrong lines as a part-year resident or nonresident: Skip lines 9 through 14 of Form 500 and use Schedule 3 instead.
- Reporting income without Georgia withholding in the income statement details: Enter only income on which Georgia tax was withheld.
- Entering wages instead of withholding on line 24: Enter tax withheld only and include the supporting W-2s and/or 1099s.
- Omitting pages or stapling the return: All five pages are required for processing. Do not staple them.
- Treating a purchased Timber Tax Credit as refundable: Use Schedule 2, not Schedule 2B.
Questions people ask
What is the Georgia standard deduction for 2024?
Form 500 lists $12,000 for single, married filing separately, head of household, or qualifying surviving spouse status. It lists $24,000 for married filing jointly. Part-year residents and nonresidents must use Schedule 3, which applies a ratio to deductions and exemptions.
What if I lived in Georgia for only part of the year or was a nonresident?
Use Schedule 3 to compute Georgia taxable income. Do not complete lines 9 through 14 of Form 500.
Can I receive my refund by direct deposit?
The form offers direct deposit to U.S. accounts only. Enter your routing number, account number, and account type. If you leave out direct deposit information or are a first-time filer, you will receive a paper check.
Can I apply my overpayment to next year’s estimated tax?
Yes. Line 31 of the 2024 form lets you enter an amount to be credited to 2025 estimated tax.
