CT-990T ES: Estimated Unrelated Business Income Tax Payment Coupons (2024)

Connecticut · Connecticut DRS · Used for tax years 2024

Form CT-990T ES contains four payment coupons for Connecticut’s 2024 estimated unrelated business income tax installments. The coupons identify the organization and payment amount due, with calculations based on estimated tax, credits, prior-year tax, and applicable prior payment

Who files this form

Every organization subject to tax under Chapter 208a must file if its estimated current-year tax liability on Schedule 1, Line 4, is more than $1,000.

The return must be filed and paid electronically unless the organization has received a waiver from the Connecticut Department of Revenue Services (DRS).

When it's due

For the 2024 income year, the installment deadlines are:

  • First installment, CT-990T ESA: 15th day of the 3rd month of the income year.
  • Second installment, CT-990T ESB: 15th day of the 6th month of the income year.
  • Third installment, CT-990T ESC: 15th day of the 9th month of the income year.
  • Fourth installment, CT-990T ESD: 15th day of the 12th month of the income year.

If a due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the return is considered timely if filed by the next business day.

What you'll need

Have the following information ready to complete the coupons and Schedule 1:

  • The organization's Connecticut Tax Registration Number, Federal Employer ID Number (FEIN), name, and address.
  • The income-year ending date.
  • The tax shown on the prior-year return, including surtax and before tax credits.
  • Estimated current-year tax and estimated tax credits.
  • Any prior-year overpayment and amounts paid with earlier installments.
  • Worksheet CT-1120AE, Line 20, if using annualized income installments.

Attach an explanation if the income-year closing month has changed. Paper filing requires a waiver received from DRS.

Common mistakes

  • Mailing without a waiver: Only organizations that receive a DRS waiver may file paper estimated payment coupons.
  • Using the wrong year's form: Submit the correct year's form to avoid processing delays.
  • Leaving identifying information off a check: For a paper payment allowed by a waiver, write “2024 CT-990T ES” and the organization's Connecticut Tax Registration Number on the front so payment is applied to the correct account.
  • Using staples or the wrong ink: Do not use staples. Complete paper coupons in blue or black ink only.
  • Overlooking earlier underpayments when an estimate changes: The form warns that changes in estimated current-year tax may leave earlier installments underpaid. Estimated payments are credited first to underpaid installments in the order they were due.

Questions people ask

How does Schedule 1 calculate the installment amount?

Schedule 1 compares a percentage of prior-year tax, including surtax and before credits, with a percentage of estimated current-year tax after estimated credits. The prior-year percentages are 30%, 70%, 80%, and 100% for the four installments. The current-year percentages are 27%, 63%, 72%, and 90%. Line 6 uses the smaller amount, with an annualization option on Line 5.

Do earlier payments and a prior-year overpayment reduce the amount due?

Yes. For the first installment, Schedule 1 subtracts the prior-year overpayment from Line 6. For later installments, it subtracts both the earlier installment payments and the prior-year overpayment. The result on Line 8 is the payment due with that coupon.

Can an organization use annualized income to calculate installments?

If the organization establishes that its annualized income installment is less than Schedule 1, Line 4, it must enter the amount from Worksheet CT-1120AE, Line 20, on Schedule 1, Line 5. Use Column A, B, C, or D for the first, second, third, or fourth installment, respectively.

Is interest charged on underpayments?

If current-year tax is more than $1,000 and estimated payments do not meet the required installment amounts, interest is assessed at 1% per month or fraction of a month on the underpayment for the period it remains underpaid.
