Who files this form

Fiduciaries of trusts and estates use Form CT-1041 EXT to request a five-and-a-half-month extension to file Form CT-1041, Connecticut Income Tax Return for Trusts and Estates.

Timely filing automatically extends the filing deadline only if federal Form 7004 has been filed with the IRS. Without a federal extension request, the fiduciary may apply for a Connecticut extension only if there is reasonable cause and must explain the request on the form.

A federal extension does not automatically extend the Connecticut filing deadline.

When it's due

For calendar tax year 2025:

  • File Form CT-1041 EXT on or before April 15, 2026.
  • The requested extension gives you until September 30, 2026, to file Form CT-1041.

This is an extension of time to file, not an extension of time to pay. Include payment if tax is due.

What you'll need

Have the following information ready:

  • Trust or estate name and Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN).
  • Fiduciary's name, title, address, and telephone number.
  • Decedent's Social Security Number, for estates only.
  • Total Connecticut income tax liability for 2025, which may be estimated.
  • Connecticut income tax withheld, 2025 estimated payments, any 2024 overpayment applied to 2025, and the Pass-Through Entity Tax Credit.
  • Whether federal Form 7004 was filed. If it was not, provide an explanation for the Connecticut extension request.

You do not need to attach a copy of the federal extension request. A paid preparer must provide their signature, date, PTIN, and firm's FEIN.

How to file

Complete the entire form, file it by the deadline, and pay the amount on Line 5. The fiduciary or an officer representing the fiduciary must sign, unless another authorized person signs as allowed by the form.

Electronically

File and pay through myconneCT at portal.ct.gov/DRS-myconneCT. After logging in, find your tax account on the Summary screen, select File an Extension, and choose your payment method.

If you file through myconneCT, you must make an electronic payment at that time. You can pay by direct withdrawal from a checking or savings account, or by credit or debit card. Card payments carry a convenience fee. Keep the confirmation number for your records.

By mail

Complete the paper form in blue or black ink. Do not use staples. Mail the form and payment to:

Department of Revenue Services

State of Connecticut

PO Box 2934

Hartford CT 06104-2934

Make your check payable to Commissioner of Revenue Services. Write “2025 Form CT-1041 EXT” and the FEIN, if applicable, or SSN (optional), on the front of the check. Do not send cash. Keep a copy of the form for your records.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving Line 1 blank. You must enter an amount. Enter “0” if you do not expect to owe income tax.
  • Entering a negative amount on Line 5. If Line 4 is greater than Line 1, enter “0.” Otherwise, subtract Line 4 from Line 1 and pay the amount in full.
  • Treating the extension as extra time to pay. Unpaid tax may be subject to interest and penalties.
  • Assuming a federal extension covers Connecticut. It does not automatically extend the Connecticut filing deadline.
  • Writing “applied for” in the FEIN field. The form specifically prohibits this. If you have not received the FEIN by the filing deadline, file without it and pay the tax due. DRS will hold the return until you receive the FEIN and forward it to DRS.
  • Forgetting signatures. The form requires an authorized signature. A paid preparer must also sign and date it.

Questions people ask

Will I receive confirmation that my extension was approved?

DRS will notify you only if your request is denied.

Can I request a Connecticut extension without filing federal Form 7004?

Yes, but only if there is reasonable cause. Explain why you are requesting the Connecticut extension on the form.

Can I request extra time to pay the tax?

Form CT-1041 EXT does not extend the payment deadline. A trust or estate may qualify for a six-month payment extension by filing Form CT-1127 with a timely filed Connecticut income tax return or extension request.

What happens if tax is paid late?

Interest is 1% per month or fraction of a month until the tax is paid in full. The late payment penalty is 10% of the tax not paid by the original due date. DRS may also impose a $50 late filing penalty even if no tax is due.

Can someone else sign for the fiduciary?

Anyone with a signed Power of Attorney on file may sign. If illness, absence, or other good cause prevents the fiduciary from requesting an extension, someone with a close personal or business relationship may sign. The request must explain why that person is signing and state their relationship to the fiduciary.
