CT-1041ES: Estimated Connecticut Income Tax Payment Coupons for Trusts and Estates (2024)

Connecticut · Connecticut DRS · Used for tax years 2024

Form CT-1041ES provides payment coupons for a trust or estate’s 2024 estimated Connecticut income tax. It includes a worksheet to calculate estimated tax and installment payments, and coupons that record taxpayer identification information and the payment amount.

Who files this form

Use Form CT-1041ES to make estimated Connecticut income tax payments for a trust or estate for 2024.

In most cases, estimated payments are required when both apply:

  • Connecticut income tax, after Connecticut withholding and any allowable Pass-Through Entity Tax Credit (PE Tax Credit), is $1,000 or more.
  • Expected Connecticut withholding, including any PE Tax Credit, is less than the required annual payment.

The required annual payment is generally the lesser of:

  • 90% of the tax shown on the 2024 Connecticut income tax return; or
  • 100% of the tax shown on the 2023 Connecticut income tax return, if the fiduciary filed a return covering 12 months.

Exceptions and special rules

  • No estimated payments are required if the trust or estate was a Connecticut resident in 2023 and did not file a 2023 Connecticut return because it had no Connecticut income tax liability.
  • No estimated payments are required if a nonresident estate, nonresident trust, or part-year resident trust had Connecticut-sourced income in 2023 but no 2023 Connecticut income tax liability.
  • A nonresident estate or trust, or part-year resident trust, without Connecticut-sourced income in 2023 must use 90% of its 2024 Connecticut income tax as its required annual payment.
  • A trust created in 2024 generally must use 90% of its 2024 Connecticut income tax, unless an exception applies.
  • A decedent’s estate does not have to make estimated payments for a taxable year ending before the date two years after the decedent’s death. No underpayment interest is charged for those years.
  • The same two-year exception applies to qualifying grantor trusts described in the instructions: trusts treated under IRC §§ 671 through 679 as owned by the decedent that will receive the estate’s residue under the will, or, if no will is admitted to probate, trusts primarily responsible for paying debts, taxes, and administration expenses.

When it's due

Estimated payment deadlines for tax year 2024

  • April 15, 2024
  • June 15, 2024
  • September 15, 2024
  • January 15, 2025

If a due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, payment is timely if filed on the next business day. Fiscal-year filers should follow federal filing due dates.

An estimated payment is timely if received by the due date or if the U.S. Postal Service cancellation mark is dated on or before that date. Designated private delivery services may also qualify, but not every service qualifies.

Final-installment interest relief for tax year 2024: If you file the 2024 income tax return and pay the full amount payable by January 31, 2025, you will not be charged interest for failing to make the estimated payment due January 15, 2025.

Qualifying farming or fishing income, tax year 2024: Pay the required installment by January 15, 2025, or file the 2024 Form CT-1041 and pay the full amount computed on the return by March 1, 2025. Under the second option, do not make estimated payments for 2024.

What you'll need

Have these details ready to complete the coupon and worksheet:

  • Trust or estate name, Federal Employer ID Number (FEIN), mailing address, and taxable-year ending date.
  • Fiduciary’s name and title.
  • Expected 2024 federal taxable income, Connecticut fiduciary adjustments, and Connecticut withholding.
  • Connecticut-sourced income and beneficiary information, if needed for the worksheet’s residency and apportionment rules.

  • Any available 2023 income tax overpayment you want to apply to an installment.

As applicable, also refer to Schedule CT-IT Credit for allowable credits, Form CT-1041 Schedule I instructions for Connecticut alternative minimum tax, and Schedule CT K-1 or Schedule CT-1041 K-1 for a reported PE Tax Credit.

If mailing a payment, send the completed payment coupon and check.

Common mistakes

  • Using the wrong year’s form. Forms are year-specific. Submit the correct year’s form to avoid processing delays.
  • Leaving out identification information. Complete all required taxpayer identification fields, and put the FEIN and “2024 Form CT-1041ES” on the check.
  • Using staples or the wrong ink. Do not use staples. Complete the paper form in blue or black ink only and print all information.
  • Underpaying an installment or paying late. Interest is calculated separately for each installment. A later catch-up payment or a refund on the annual return does not necessarily prevent interest.
  • Entering an out-of-range apportionment factor on worksheet Line 5. Do not enter less than zero or more than 1. Enter 0 if the result is zero or less, or 1.0000 if it is greater than 1. Round to four decimal places.

Questions people ask

Can I apply a 2023 overpayment to a 2024 installment?

Yes. You may subtract any available overpayment of 2023 income tax from your installment amount when determining the payment.

What if the trust or estate’s income varies during the year?

The annualized income installment method may reduce or eliminate the estimated payment for one or more periods. The instructions refer to Informational Publication 2018(11) and Worksheet CT-1040 AES.

Can interest apply even if the annual return shows a refund?

Yes. Interest may apply if withholding, estimated payments, and any PE Tax Credit did not cover the required amount by an installment due date. Interest is calculated separately for each installment at 1% per month or fraction of a month, until the earlier of April 15, 2025, or the date the underpayment is paid.

When does the worksheet show that no estimated payment is required?

No estimated payment is required if worksheet Line 15 minus Line 16 is zero or less, or if Line 12 minus Line 16 is less than $1,000.
