Questions people ask

How do I calculate a gain or loss on line 1?

If the cost or other basis is more than the sales price, subtract the sales price from the basis and enter the loss in column (d). If the sales price is more than the basis, subtract the basis from the sales price and enter the gain in column (e).

Where do I enter a California capital loss carryover from 2024?

Enter it on line 6 of the 2025 schedule. The form directs you to see the instructions for that line.

What if line 8 shows a net loss?

Go to line 9 and enter the smaller of the loss on line 8 or $3,000 ($1,500 if married/RDP filing separately). The form also directs you to see the instructions.

Where does the California adjustment go?
