Who files this form
Use the 2024 Arkansas Form AR4684 to report casualty or theft gains and losses for the property categories shown on the form:
- Section A, Personal Use Property: Property not used in a trade or business or for income-producing purposes.
- Section B, Business and Income-Producing Property: Business, rental, royalty, income-producing, and employee property.
What you'll need
Have the information needed for the form ready:
- The primary taxpayer’s legal name and Social Security number.
- Each property’s type, location, and date acquired.
- The cost or other basis for personal-use property, or cost or adjusted basis for business and income-producing property.
- Insurance or other reimbursement amounts, whether or not you filed a claim.
- The property’s fair market value before and after the casualty or theft.
For Section A, line 17 uses adjusted gross income from Form AR1000F or AR1000NR, line 25. Section B also asks for casualty or theft gains from federal Form 4797, line 32, if applicable.
Common mistakes
- Combining separate personal-use events too early. Use a separate Form AR4684 through line 12 for each casualty or theft event. Use only one Form AR4684 for lines 13 through 18.
- Skipping the instruction references. The form says to see the instructions before reporting a disaster casualty loss in Section A and before completing line 15.
- Overlooking special reimbursement situations. The form directs you to the instructions when a gain line includes reimbursement you did not claim or when payment for the loss arrived in a later tax year.
- Missing the Section B total-loss note. If property was totally destroyed by casualty or lost through theft, enter the amount from line 20 on line 26.
Questions people ask
Can I list several properties damaged in the same event?
Yes. Use a separate line for each property lost or damaged in the same casualty or theft. Include each property’s type, location, and date acquired.
Do I report reimbursement if I did not file an insurance claim?
The reimbursement lines in both sections ask for insurance or other reimbursement whether or not you filed a claim.
Where does the final personal-use loss amount go?
Enter the result from Section A, line 18, on AR3, line 18. Estates and trusts enter it on the “Other deductions” line of their tax return.
Does Section B separate property by how long it was held?
Yes. Its summary separates casualties and thefts of property held one year or less from those involving property held more than one year.
