6385: 2025 Tax Attribute Carryovers (2025)
Alaska · Alaska DOR · Used for tax years 2025
Alaska Form 6385 tracks net operating loss and capital loss carryovers and carrybacks, excess charitable contribution carryovers, and net Alaska alternative minimum tax (AMT) previously paid. It calculates available amounts and the losses to be used on the return.
Who files this form
The 2025 Form 6385 is used to report Alaska tax attributes: net operating loss (NOL) carryovers and carrybacks, unused capital losses, excess charitable contributions, and Alaska alternative minimum tax (AMT) previously paid.
The form limits the NOL carryback section to insurance companies that qualify. It refers to instructions for qualification details, but those instructions were not provided.
What you'll need
Have the following information ready for the sections you complete:
- The name and EIN shown on the return, and the taxable year’s beginning and ending dates if not using calendar year 2025.
- The name and EIN of the Alaska taxpayer that generated the attributes, if different from the taxpayer or taxpayers filing the return.
- Tax year-end dates, loss amounts generated, and amounts previously used for NOLs and capital losses.
- Excess charitable contribution amounts, amounts converted to NOLs, and amounts previously used.
- Alaska income from Schedule A, line 1, and the Alaska capital and section 1231 gains requested on lines 11 and 15.
- Alaska AMT paid and AMT credits claimed for tax returns that began after December 31, 2022.
Common mistakes
- Entering negative numbers. The form says to enter all numbers as positive numbers.
- Leaving out a different taxpayer that generated the attributes. Provide that taxpayer’s name and EIN, and attach additional forms if necessary.
- Using the NOL carryback section without qualifying. Line 5 is only for insurance companies that qualify. The form directs you to the instructions for details.
Questions people ask
How are NOL carryovers separated on the form?
Line 1 reports NOL carryovers generated in tax years beginning before January 1, 2018. Line 4d reports those generated in tax years beginning after December 31, 2017. In both tables, the available amount equals the NOL generated plus charitable contributions converted to NOL, minus amounts previously used.
Where do I report the NOL carryover used?
Add lines 4a and 4f and enter the result on line 4h. Enter that amount on Schedule A, line 2, as well.
How much capital loss carryover can be used?
Line 12 uses the lesser of line 10, total capital loss carryover available, or line 11, net Alaska capital and section 1231 gains. Enter the result on Schedule J, line 9, too. The form refers to instructions for line 11.
Where does the charitable contribution carryover go?
Add the available amounts in line 17, column E. Enter the total on line 18 and Schedule K, line 6.
Which Alaska AMT payments are included?
Line 19 covers Alaska net AMT paid on tax returns that began after December 31, 2022. Subtract AMT credits claimed from AMT paid for each row, then total column D on line 20.
