40A: 2024 Alabama Individual Income Tax Return (Short Form) (2024)

Alabama · Alabama DOR · Used for tax years 2024

Form 40A is Alabama’s 2024 individual income tax return for full-year residents. It reports wages, salaries, tips, interest and dividend income, deductions, exemptions, tax, and payments to determine the amount owed or refunded.

Who files this form

Form 40A is for full-year Alabama residents only. For 2024, you and your spouse, if filing jointly, must have been Alabama residents for the entire year. If not, the form says not to complete it and to see “Which Form To File” in the instructions.

If your interest and dividend income is over $1,500, use Form 40 instead.

The supplied form does not state who is required to file an Alabama income tax return.

What you'll need

  • Withholding statements: Attach copies of all withholding statements, including Forms W-2, W-2G, and/or 1099. Complete and attach Schedule W-2.
  • Your 2024 federal return: You need the federal adjusted gross income and federal taxable income for Part I. If claiming the federal tax deduction on line 9, attach pages 1 and 2 and Schedule 1 of your federal return, if applicable. Use the supplied Federal Income Tax Deduction Worksheet to calculate the deduction.
  • Personal information: Have your Social Security number, your spouse’s Social Security number if applicable, address, employer information, and occupation available. The form also asks for driver’s license information and dates of birth for you and your spouse.
  • Dependent information: Have each dependent’s name, Social Security number, relationship to you, and information about whether you provided more than half their support.
  • Payment voucher: Form 40V must accompany a payment.

How to file

Complete the return, including the General Information section on page 2, which all taxpayers must complete. Attach Schedule W-2 and the required supporting documents. Sign in black ink. Both spouses must sign a joint return. Keep a copy for your records.

Common mistakes

  • Using Form 40A without full-year residency: Do not complete this form if you or your spouse on a joint return were not Alabama residents for all of 2024.
  • Entering federal withholding as the federal tax deduction: Do not enter the federal tax withheld from your W-2s on line 9. Use the Federal Income Tax Deduction Worksheet.
  • Missing attachments: Attach the federal return pages required when claiming the line 9 deduction. Complete Schedule W-2 fully and include it with copies of all withholding statements to receive proper credit for Alabama tax withheld. Schedule W-2 must be submitted and/or printed in landscape format.
  • Counting yourself or your spouse as a dependent: The dependents section says not to include either of you.
  • Forgetting signatures: Your refund cannot be processed until you sign. Both spouses must sign a joint return.
  • Sending a payment without Form 40V: The voucher must accompany the payment. Place both loose in the mailing envelope.
  • Using the wrong mailing address: Prior-year returns and amended returns go to the separate address listed for those returns, not the three addresses for current-year Form 40A returns.
