Questions people ask

How do I find my tax in the table?

Find the row that includes your taxable income from Form 40, line 16. Your income must be at least the first amount but less than the second amount. Then read across to the column for your filing status.

Which filing status column should I use?

Use the column that matches the status checked on your return. Single, married filing separately, and head of family share one column. Married filing jointly has a separate column.

Where do I enter the tax amount?

Enter the tax on Form 40, line 17. In the printed example, a married couple filing jointly with taxable income of $23,360 finds the row for at least $23,300 but less than $23,400 and enters $1,088 on line 17.

What if my taxable income is over $100,000?

Use the worksheet printed after the table. Subtract $100,000 from your taxable income and multiply the result by 0.05. Then add:

  • $4,958 if you are single, married filing separately, or head of family.
  • $4,918 if you are married filing jointly.

The total is your tax.
