Who files this form

Use Schedule 1 for your 2024 return if you have:

  • Additional income, such as business or farm income or loss, unemployment compensation, or prizes and awards. Report these in Part I.
  • Adjustments to income, such as deductible student loan interest, the deductible part of self-employment tax, or educator expenses. Report these in Part II.

For 2024, Schedule 1 also has a space at the top for amounts on Form 1099-K that were included in error or were for personal items sold at a loss.

Attach Schedule 1 to Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR.

When it's due

For tax year 2024, the filing deadline printed for Form 1040 and Form 1040-SR is April 15, 2025. Attach Schedule 1 when you file your return.

You can get an automatic 6-month filing extension by filing Form 4868 no later than your return's due date. This does not extend the time to pay your tax.

The instructions describe special filing extensions for qualifying taxpayers abroad and those serving in or supporting designated combat zones or contingency operations.

What you'll need

Have your name and Social Security number as shown on Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR. If applicable, have your Forms 1099-K available for the entry at the top of Schedule 1.

Schedule 1 tells you to attach these forms for the listed items:

  • Schedule C: Business income or loss.
  • Form 4797: Other gains or losses.
  • Schedule E: Rental real estate, royalties, partnerships, S corporations, trusts, and related income.
  • Schedule F: Farm income or loss.
  • Form 2106: Certain business expenses of reservists, performing artists, and fee-basis government officials.
  • Form 8889: Health savings account deduction.
  • Form 3903: Moving expenses for members of the Armed Forces.
  • Schedule SE: Deductible part of self-employment tax.

For alimony entries, the form asks for the date of the original divorce or separation agreement. For alimony paid, it also asks for the recipient's Social Security number.

How to file

Attach Schedule 1 to Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR.

  • E-file: The instructions describe IRS electronic filing options at IRS.gov/FreeFile and IRS.gov/DirectFile. Check those pages for eligibility and details. If you e-file your return, you do not need to mail it.
  • Mail: For Form 1040 or 1040-SR, the instructions direct you to the mailing-address chart at the end of the full instructions. That chart is not included in the supplied text. See IRS.gov/Form1040 for address updates.
  • Private delivery service: Check IRS.gov/PDS for designated services and IRS.gov/PDSStreetAddresses for the address to use. Only the U.S. Postal Service can deliver to P.O. boxes.

Common mistakes

  • Overlooking remaining Form 1099-K amounts. The form's note says amounts other than those entered at the top of Schedule 1 should be reported elsewhere on your return, depending on the transaction.
  • Treating a filing extension as a payment extension. The instructions warn that the automatic 6-month filing extension does not extend the time to pay. Unpaid tax can lead to interest and penalties.
  • Mailing a return after e-filing it. The instructions say there is no need to mail an e-filed return.
  • Using a private delivery service for a P.O. box. Only the U.S. Postal Service can deliver to P.O. boxes.
