8962: Premium Tax Credit (PTC) (2025)
Federal · IRS · Used for tax years 2025
Form 8962 calculates your Premium Tax Credit (PTC) and compares it with advance payments using household income and premium amounts from Form 1095-A. It determines any net credit or repayment of excess advance payments and attaches to Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR.
Who files this form
File Form 8962 with your 2025 income tax return if:
- You are claiming the premium tax credit (PTC).
- Advance payments of the credit (APTC) were made for you or someone else in your tax family.
- APTC was paid for someone you told the Marketplace would be in your tax family, but neither you nor anyone else included that person in a tax family.
You must file a return and attach Form 8962 in these situations even if you would not otherwise have to file. Use Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR, not Form 1040-SS.
If someone else enrolled a member of your tax family and APTC was paid for that person's coverage, you must reconcile those payments. Get a copy of Form 1095-A from the person who enrolled them.
If someone claims you as a dependent, that person files Form 8962 for your coverage. You do not need to file it yourself.
When it's due
- January 31, 2026, for tax year 2025 coverage: The Marketplace must provide or send Form 1095-A by this date. This is the Marketplace's deadline, not your Form 8962 filing deadline.
The supplied text does not give a calendar filing deadline for your 2025 Form 8962.
What you'll need
Have these forms and details available:
- Form 1095-A for your Marketplace coverage. It reports coverage months, premiums, and advance credit payments.
- Your 2025 tax return information, including family members, adjusted gross income, tax-exempt interest, and nontaxable Social Security benefits. Form 2555 amounts are also used if applicable.
- Income information for dependents required to file because of their income. Do not include dependents filing only to claim a refund of withheld or estimated tax.
- If you share policy amounts with another taxpayer: the policy number, the other taxpayer's Social Security number, allocation months, and allocation percentages.
- If applicable: Form W-2, box 12, code FF, for your employer's QSEHRA benefit, and Form 1095-C for information about employer coverage offered to you.
How to file
Attach Form 8962 to your Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR.
Use the same name and Social Security number shown on your return. For a joint return, use the first name and Social Security number listed. If your return uses an ITIN, enter that number on Form 8962.
The supplied text does not provide a mailing address or e-file directions. Instructions and updates are available at IRS.gov/Form8962.
Common mistakes
- Using an outdated or void Form 1095-A. Use a form marked “CORRECTED” instead of the original. If a form is marked “VOID,” do not use it or the earlier form for that policy.
- Not reporting changes to the Marketplace. Promptly report changes in income, address, employment, other coverage eligibility, or family members. Updating advance payments can help you avoid owing tax when you file.
- Assuming income above 400% of the federal poverty line rules out the credit. For tax year 2025, you may still be allowed a PTC.
- Overlooking a QSEHRA benefit. An affordable QSEHRA means no PTC for that month. If it is unaffordable, reduce the monthly PTC by the monthly permitted benefit, but not below zero, and write “QSEHRA” in the top margin of page 1.
Questions people ask
What does Form 8962 do?
It calculates your premium tax credit and compares it with advance payments made to your insurer during the year.
What if my advance payments were too high or too low?
If advance payments exceed your allowed credit, you must repay the excess, subject to certain limitations. If they are less than your credit, the difference can reduce your tax payment or increase your refund.
Can I claim the credit for insurance bought outside the Marketplace?
No. The PTC applies only to qualified health plans purchased through a Marketplace. Catastrophic plans, stand-alone dental plans, and SHOP plans do not qualify.
What if my Form 1095-A has not arrived?
If you expect a Form 1095-A and do not receive it by early February, contact the Marketplace.
Can I claim the PTC if I am married filing separately?
Generally, no. An exception may apply to victims of domestic abuse or spousal abandonment who meet the requirements in the instructions. Qualifying taxpayers must check the box on line A.
